The Amazon Aurora database combines aspects of SQL compatibility with the open-source PostgreSQL database, a managed service, and an architecture that separates compute and storage. Using Aurora can involve learning and activities for any or all of these aspects. This session explores three pathways for getting started on Aurora: 1) Migrating the database schema and data and porting database applications. 2) The culture shift involved in using a managed service. 3) The new possibilities opened up by taking advantage of Aurora features. The session advises which old habits to revisit, explains how these journeys affect developers and administrators, and demonstrates techniques for using Aurora in an efficient and cost-effective way.
